Nimiriano wins 2019 Women in News Editorial Leadership Award for Africa
Anna Nimiriano Nunu Siya a South Sudanese journalist who is constantly threatened for pursuing the truth won the 2019 Women in News Editorial Leadership Award for Africa at the 71st World News Media Congress (WNMC) in Glasgow United Kingdom.
Named by Fortune magazine as 1 of the world’s 50 greatest leaders, Nimiriano is the first woman to own a newspaper in South Sudan. She was acknowledged for her work with Juba Monitor newspaper and presented with the award during a Gala Dinner at the 1901 built 22 themed state-of-the-art Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
While responding, Nimiriano thanked Women in the news room for nominating her and recognizing her work in Africa.

Anna Nimiriano Nunu Siya is Editor in Chief and founder of Juba Monitor a daily English publication in South Sudan. A veteran South Sudanese journalist with over fifteen years of experience in print and broadcast journalism, Nimiriano was identified by TIME as one of 10 journalists around the world who are facing injustice, incarceration and other threats in connection with their work. She is constantly threatened in her country for pursuing the truth.
Nimiriano fights to keep her colleagues out of jail for their reporting and has in the past been ordered by the government to shut down the newspaper. She perseveres in spite of arrests, threats and constant censorship of herself and her colleagues.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from college of Community Studies and Rural Development, University of Juba and a Diploma in Theology, Institute of Theology for the Laity. Has attended several local and international media training workshops in Kenya, Uganda, Washington DC, Sierra Leone, Djibouti, Tanzania, China and India. She is a member of the National Editors’ Forum in South Sudan.
