Resource Centre for Women in Politics births in Maiduguri
On Thursday 10 August 2023, a Resource Centre for Women in Politics was launched in Maiduguri Borno state to provide assistance in running effective political campaigns which will enhance the leadership capacity of women in politics and governance.
Dr. Asabe Bashir, Director General of Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD) stated that the centre was borne out of the need to provide access to resources critical to political campaigns to ensure adequate representation of women in politics and governance.
UN Women country representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS -Beatrice Eyong faulted the extremely low representation of women in politics which hinders the growth and development of our country Nigeria. She highlighted that the under-representation of women in leadership and decision making globally and in Nigeria is inherently linked to other far-reaching gender- based issues. Beatrice Eyong commended the few women who despite the prevailing challenges took the bold step to venture into politics and further congratulate those who emerged as candidates and winners for the 2023 elections.
The Resource Centre for Women in Politics is an initiative of UN Women in partnership with Canadian government and in collaboration with Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development. The resource centre will be replicated across the six (6) geo-political zones in Nigeria with the successful beginning in Borno, Abuja and Cross River State.
