The Power of Passion and Consistency
Taiwo Adeleye Programmes Officer, Olufunmilola Olukeye, Director of Human Resource and Organisational Effectiveness ActionAid
Five years ago, fresh out of the University of Lagos, I embarked on a journey uncertain of what lay ahead. Today, I stand here, honoured with awards, reflecting on the transformative journey of the Women’s Voice and Leadership Nigeria project alongside Women Radio. Our mission was clear: to amplify the voices of women and pave the way for their leadership in Nigeria.
From the outset, we faced formidable challenges—societal norms, cultural barriers, and scarce resources. Yet, armed with perseverance and a shared vision, we pressed forward. A pivotal moment was the HerVoice radio program, where women courageously shared their stories and aspirations. It underscored the profound impact of providing women a platform to be heard and valued.
Over these five years, we’ve witnessed remarkable change. Women we’ve supported have risen to leadership roles in their communities. Through collaboration and advocacy, including our efforts for the 35% affirmative action, Nigerian women achieved a landmark victory in 2022, a testament to unity and shared purpose.
A key lesson learned is the power of consistency. By meticulously documenting our progress through impact reports, funded by Global Affairs Canada through ActionAid Nigeria, we’ve not only tracked achievements but also honed our strategies for greater impact.
This success belongs to the courageous women at the heart of our project. Your strength and resilience drive everything we do. This award is a tribute to your spirit. Yet, this milestone is just the beginning. We must build on this momentum, advocating for policies that empower women and nurturing spaces where their voices thrive.
Our journey wouldn’t be possible without pioneers like Victoria Uwaifo and Omozele Umoren, whose leadership laid the foundation for our achievements. Special thanks also to the dedicated team at Women Radio 91.7, especially our CEO Toun Okewale Sonaiya.
As we celebrate, let’s remember: this isn’t just a recognition of past efforts, but a call to action for the future. Together, let’s continue shaping a more inclusive and empowered tomorrow.
