Turning Adversity into Triumph: 2nd Edition of UpYou Women Conference in Lagos
On Saturday, 31 August 2024, women from diverse backgrounds gathered in Lagos for the second edition of the UpYou Women Conference, themed “Through the Fire: Triumphing in Adversity.” The event, organised by Ezinne Kufre-Ekanem, host of UpYou with Ezinne on Women Radio 91.7 FM, was designed to empower women facing challenges by drawing inspiration from the stories of notable figures who have overcome significant obstacles.
Dr. Martha Udom Emmanuel, former First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, the special guest of the event delivered a powerful message on the universality of adversity. She emphasized that challenges are a natural part of life and can catalyse personal growth and greatness. Dr Emmanuel urged women to view adversity as an opportunity for transformation rather than a barrier to success.

The keynote address was delivered by Nkiru Olumide-Ojo, Founder of The Lighthouse Network and Head of Africa Regions & Offshore Corporate Communications Marketing & CSL at Standard Bank Group. Olumide-Ojo highlighted the importance of resilience and the need for continuous reinvention. She advised women to stay anchored in their faith, seek therapy when necessary, and remain open to evolving as they navigate life’s challenges.

The conference also featured a lineup of distinguished speakers who shared insights on various aspects of personal and professional growth. Sola Adesakin, Founder of Stewards Smart spoke on the critical importance of financial empowerment for women. Eden A. Onwuka, Founder of Women and Half USA, discussed how to face health challenges with grace and positivity. Olaide Omosebi, counsellor and co-founder of the Gnosis Help Initiative, guided on how to heal after trauma while Fadekemi Olumide-Aluko, an Educational Consultant and Thespian offered advice on thriving in the aftermath of divorce.

The event featured a musical performance by Yinka Davies, a raffle draw, and the launch of “Project Empower Her: 100 Women, 100 Stories Across Nigeria.” A panel discussion followed, with contributions from esteemed panellists including Adeola Kingsley-James, Dr Blossom Maduafokwa, Dr Ruth Goma, Olabisi Usidame, Dr Genevieve Duncan Obuobi and Ifeanyi Oputa, who shared their perspectives on overcoming adversity.
In her closing remarks, Ezinne Kufre-Ekanem encouraged attendees to hold onto the lessons learned, emphasizing that triumphing over adversity is a journey best undertaken in solidarity with others.
