VOW and WFM91.7 Celebrate Nigerian Media’s Advocacy for Gender Balance

The Voice of Women Empowerment Foundation (VOW), in collaboration with Women Radio 91.7 FM, hosted a Thank You Dinner at the Lagos Marriott Hotel to honour media organisations for their invaluable contributions in amplifying Nigerian women’s voices and advancing gender balance throughout 2024.
The event brought together prominent executives from leading media organisations, including TVC, Arise TV, City FM, Channels TV, TV360, Vanguard, Penpushing Media, Daily Trust, The Cable, BellaNaija, AIT/Raypower, Smailz FM, Ovation, Guardian, Punch, and others. These partners have tirelessly championed women’s stories, shed light on their challenges, and celebrated their achievements.
Donor organisations in attendance shared impactful remarks about their collaboration with Women Radio 91.7FM and urged the media to further amplify initiatives around women’s empowerment and inclusion. Vivian Efem-Bassey, Programs Manager of ActionAid Nigeria’s Lagos office, highlighted five years of impactful partnership. Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, Founding Director of the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center (WARDC), commended the station for its dedication to advancing women’s empowerment. Abiodun Owo, Programs Manager at Aspire Coronation Trust (ACT) Foundation, reflected on ACT’s support for innovative programs like Radio Doctor.
Media colleagues shared inspiring experiences working with Women Radio 91.7FM. Representatives from Arise TV, Raypower, Penpushing Media, City FM, Smailz FM, and Vanguard emphasised the station’s pivotal role in fostering national discourse on gender balance and inclusion.
In her keynote address, Toun Okewale Sonaiya, Executive Director of VOW, celebrated the power of partnerships. She remarked, “This evening is about reflecting on our journey together, celebrating shared milestones, and envisioning an even brighter future. Thanks to your efforts, women now have greater visibility and influence in leadership. Together, we amplify their voices and champion their causes.”
The event also spotlighted Women Radio 91.7’s key achievements, including the AI-powered assistant Nimi AI, which provides women with resources to address challenges from the comfort of their homes. Additionally, the launch of the ReportHer Awards 2025 was announced, inviting applications from media organisations and journalists.
As Nigeria’s only women-focused radio station, Women Radio 91.7FM continues to lead advocacy efforts for women in leadership and governance. VOW expressed heartfelt gratitude to all donors and media partners while reaffirming its commitment to strengthening collaborations through capacity-building initiatives and public engagement.
The evening concluded on a high note, with stakeholders pledging to deepen partnerships in 2025 to advance gender equity across all sectors in Nigeria.
