Civil Society Advocates For Rule of Law in State Assembly Leadership Crisis.

Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
Civil society groups in Lagos have called for the respect of due process and the rule of law amid the ongoing leadership crisis at the Lagos State House of Assembly. The coalition of civil societies has thrown its weight behind Honourable Mojisola Meranda, affirming her as the legitimate Speaker of the House.
The groups emphasized that their stance is rooted in upholding the rule of law, not political interests. Dr. Abiola Akiyode Afolabi, convener of Womanifesto, while speaking to our correspondent, reiterated that Honourable Meranda was duly elected following proper procedures and in accordance with the law. She called on all stakeholders to respect the constitution and support a leadership that represents not only the best interest of Lagos State but also the aspirations of women and girls across Nigeria, stressing the importance of women in society.
Joyce Oduah, Vice President of the West Africa Lawyers Union, emphasized the importance of due process being followed. She affirmed that every well-meaning Lagosian must support Honourable Mojisola Meranda, stating that she attained the office of Speaker on merit.
Honourable Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as Speaker on January 13th, 2013, following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Civil societies are urging all parties involved to prioritize the rule of law and ensure that due process is followed. They also urged those not satisfied with the process to approach a court of competent jurisdiction.
