Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim Reaffirms Nigeria’s Commitment to Women’s Empowerment at CSW70

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality and strengthening social protection systems as the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development,H.E Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, delivered Nigeria’s national statement at the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Addressing delegates from across the world, the Minister emphasized Nigeria’s determination to place women and families at the center of national development. She highlighted the Federal Government’s expanding social protection framework, which has grown significantly over the last decade.

According to the Minister, the social protection architecture has expanded from fewer than one million households in 2015 to nearly ten million households in 2026, with women accounting for more than 70 percent of the primary beneficiaries.

She also noted that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared 2026 as the “Year of Families and Social Development,” a move aimed at strengthening family structures and promoting inclusive social development.

The Minister stressed that empowering women remains critical to sustainable development, inclusive governance, and social stability. She called for stronger global partnerships to ensure that policies translate into real opportunities for women and girls.

Nigeria’s participation at the global gathering signals the country’s continued engagement in shaping international policies that promote gender equality and social justice.
