Buhari inaugurates Peace Mission Headquarters for African First Ladies in Abuja
The First Lady of Nigeria and president of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) Dr Aisha Buhari on Tuesday 9 May 2023 inaugurated the newly constructed headquarters of AFLPM in Abuja. The secretariat will serve as an institution for promoting research on peace and security in Africa.
According to Buhari, most African countries are going through trying times characterised by conflicts that tend to reverse the gains of independence and development and urged leaders across the continent to make efforts towards strengthening mechanisms that guarantee peace. “I am happy to report that we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Africa Union to enable us to collaborate on our mission to promote peace in Africa.” Buhari charged women leaders and mothers to say no to new cultural structures that unleash violence on innocent victims, especially women and children. “If we must have peace in our nation there must be peace in our cities, communities and most importantly in our hearts”.
Dr Joyce Banda, former Malawian president called for men and women to work together in harnessing the resources in the continent. Banda called on African leaders to create opportunities for the people, urging African countries to support and look out for each other to strengthen the continent.
As the tenure of Dr Aisha Buhari comes to an end on May 29 2023 at the African First Ladies Peace Mission, she will be handing over to the First Lady of Burundi and the First Lady of Niger Republic as vice-president. Buhari promises to remain supportive as the Chair of the Honourary Advisory Council while emphasizing the commitment to support women and young girls across the continent.
