BUCKINGHAM, UNITED KINGDOM | 16 OCTOBER 2026 — Apostle Folorunso Alakija, Nigerian business leader, philanthropist, author and minister, has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom in recognition of her achievements in enterprise, philanthropy and nation-building.

The award was presented on Friday, 16 October 2026, at The Radcliffe Centre, University of Buckingham, during the institution’s Africa Day celebrations. The ceremony was presided over by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Cole, and formed part of a celebration of leadership, service and the role of education in driving positive change.
In his remarks, Professor Cole noted that Apostle Alakija embodies the values of achievement, service and leadership represented by the University, which is marking its 50th anniversary.
Professor Debarpita Bardhan-Correia, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Humanities & Social Sciences, highlighted Alakija’s commitment to creating opportunities for others, describing it as one of the highest expressions of leadership.
She noted that the occasion celebrated not only the achievements of an accomplished African woman but also the possibilities for stronger collaboration between Africa and the United Kingdom through education, enterprise and leadership.
Delivering the oration, Professor Shalom Lloyd MBE commended Alakija’s ability to bridge cultures, unite people, transform organisations and inspire a brighter future. Emphasising the importance of investing in Africa’s next generation, she asked: “What better investment can we make than developing Africa’s future leaders?”

Alakija Urges Young People to Pursue Excellence and Serve Others
Accepting the honorary degree in the University’s red doctoral gown, Alakija expressed gratitude to Almighty God and thanked the University Council and Senate for the recognition. She said she was particularly honoured to receive the distinction during Buckingham Africa Day.
Speaking on Africa’s potential and the responsibility that comes with achievement, she said: “Africa is a continent of immense potential, creativity and resilience and that achievement carries responsibility to serve others.”
She encouraged students and young people to pursue their calling with passion, perseverance and diligence, urging them to approach their ambitions with humility and excellence while recognising the value of their contributions.
Her message reflected a central principle of her professional and philanthropic journey: that success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities for others and contributes to the greater good.

A Career Spanning Multiple Industries
Alakija’s career spans banking, fashion, oil and gas, real estate, printing, philanthropy and enterprise development. Her work across these sectors has established her as a prominent figure in Nigerian business, while her philanthropic activities and commitment to mentorship have extended her influence beyond commercial enterprise.
Her journey continues to inspire women and girls in Nigeria and across Africa, demonstrating the possibilities that emerge when ambition is matched by resilience, purposeful leadership and a commitment to creating opportunities for others.
