SPPG Pushes Human-Centered Governance at Big Ideas Platform 2026 in Abuja

The School of Politics, Policy, and Governance (SPPG) has called for a major shift in Africa’s leadership culture, urging governments across the continent to embrace empathy, inclusion, and people-centered governance as key pillars for sustainable development.

The call was made during the fourth edition of the SPPG Big Ideas Platform (BIP 2026), held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. Themed “Leading With Our Humanity: Ideas That Elevate Our Communities,” the summit convened policymakers, civic innovators, scholars, traditional leaders, and community advocates to discuss the future of governance in Africa.

A major highlight of the event was a strong critique of rigid governance structures that often exclude the people most affected by policy decisions. Speakers repeatedly emphasized the need for leadership models that are participatory, accountable, and rooted in human dignity.

One of the most emotional conversations at the summit focused on the displacement of indigenous communities. Decades after, many original inhabitants continue to seek recognition, inclusion, and adequate compensation.

During the Village Square Conversation, Dr. Abiodun Essiet stressed the importance of governments working alongside communities rather than imposing policies on them.
“We must govern with communities, not just for communities,” she said, drawing from her experience in grassroots engagement and development work.

Discussions also explored how civic technology can strengthen transparency and public accountability. Panelists referenced Tracka by BudgIT as an example of digital innovation enabling citizens to monitor constituency projects and track public spending in real time.
Other sessions addressed disability inclusion, ethical traditional leadership, and the role of storytelling in amplifying marginalized voices across African societies.

The event also featured the launch of Leading With Our Humanity, a new publication by Dr. Amina Salihu. The book advocates empathy-driven leadership and argues that humanity should remain central to governance, policy formulation, and institutional reform.
Former Nigerian Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili delivered the closing remarks, encouraging attendees to remain hopeful about Africa’s future.

Moved by the presentation from the school children, Ezekwesili reinforced the summit’s focus on values-based leadership and the role of younger generations in shaping the continent’s future.
Since its launch in 2023, the Big Ideas Platform has grown into a prominent gathering for conversations around governance reform, civic innovation, public accountability, and democratic participation in Africa.

Organizers say outcomes from the 2026 edition will strengthen collaboration across governance, human rights, and civic technology ecosystems while pushing for policies that place people at the center of leadership decisions.
